Surf & stay · Edava, Varkala
A bed two minutes from the break, breakfast on the roof, and a lesson every morning with the same instructor who watched you yesterday. That last part is what makes the week work.
The point of it
Surfing is not learned in lessons, it is learned in the gaps between them, and the gaps have to be short. Come back the next morning and your body still remembers where its feet went. Come back next February and you are starting again, politely.
Staying at the house removes everything between you and the next session. No taxi to book, no alarm set for a beach half an hour away, no deciding at 6am whether it's worth it. You walk downstairs, someone tells you what the sea is doing, and you go.
It also means the same instructor sees you five days running. On day three they stop teaching you the pop-up and start fixing the specific thing you personally get wrong, which is the point at which coaching becomes worth paying for.
Adding it up
There is no bundled package price at Kuma and no surf-and-stay discount to chase. You book a bed and you book lessons, at the rates published on the rest of the site. Here is what that adds up to, so you can decide before you enquire rather than after.
The cheapest way to do it
A room to yourself
Rates shown are the published per-night and per-session prices at the time of the last update, not a quoted package. Shorter or longer stays scale the same way. Swap a group lesson for a private one and the difference is ₹500 a session.
The house
Kuma sleeps 14, five private rooms and a four-bed dorm, which is small enough that everyone eats together and nobody has to introduce themselves twice. People who arrive alone on Monday are making plans with strangers by Wednesday, and that is not an accident of the design.

A week here
Nothing here is a schedule you have to keep. It is what happens if you don't make other plans, which most people stop doing by day two.
Morning
Out by half seven, back by ten, and the rest of the day is yours.
Late morning
Chechi's Kerala breakfast, eaten slowly, with everyone comparing notes on the same three waves.
Afternoon
Sleep it off, work if you have to, the WiFi holds up, or go and find the backwaters.
Evening
Dinner up on the roof as the sun goes, then someone produces a speaker and it gets late.
Surf & stay in Varkala
Not as a single bundled price. You book a bed and you book lessons at the published rates, a dorm bed from ₹800 a night and a group lesson at ₹1,500, which means you can add or drop sessions during the week without renegotiating anything.
Five nights is the shape that works. Three is enough to get standing and leave wanting more; a week means you go home actually able to catch your own waves rather than being pushed into them.
About 50 metres, a two-minute walk. You can hear the water from the rooftop. Boards live downstairs with an outdoor rinse, so nothing wet comes into the room.
Kerala breakfast is included with the A/C Double and the dorm bed, and it lands late enough to be the meal after surfing rather than before it. The rest of the day is on you, the cliff is eight minutes away and full of places to eat, and there is a list of the ones we actually go to on the Explore page.
Yes, and plenty do. There's the rooftop, the backwaters at Kappil, the skatepark, and a cliff full of restaurants eight minutes away. Nobody at breakfast will make it weird.
Bookings are settled in full at the time of booking rather than with a deposit. What you get back if plans change is written out in the cancellation policy.
