The quiver

Which one you should actually take.

Renting the board you want rather than the board that suits the day is the most common way to waste a session. Ask whoever hands it to you, they watched the sea this morning and you didn't.

Soft-top

First month of surfing

Big, buoyant and forgiving, with a foam deck that doesn't hurt when it hits you, which it will. Catches waves you would otherwise miss and makes the small days here worth paddling out for.

Funboard

You can stand up reliably

The step after the soft-top. Enough volume to still catch everything, enough rail to start turning along a wave instead of straight at the beach. Most people rent this one for longer than they expect to.

Shortboard

You already surf

For the days with some size in the water. On a knee-high morning at Edava a shortboard is a swimming aid. Take the funboard and enjoy yourself instead.

Soft-tops for the humble, funboards for the honest, shortboards for the brave and the lying. Take one out, bring it back salty. Bring it back dinged and we'll talk, gently, and on this beach boards have survived far worse than whatever you did.

Ding repair

Bring us the broken one.

Cracked rail, crushed nose, fin box hanging on by hope. Bring it in. Boards have been patched on this beach for years and yours is not the worst we've seen. It's not even close.

Quoted on inspection, usually same-week. Bring it in dry if you can, a board that has been taking on water all week needs to sit before anyone can usefully patch it, and that is the difference between a repair that lasts a season and one that lasts a fortnight.

Send us a photo of the damage

Collection

Where to pick one up.

Boards live at the house. Sree Eight, near Manthara Temple, Edava, a minute's walk from the water. There is a rinse point and board storage on site, so if you're renting for several days you don't have to carry it back and forth.

Message ahead on a busy morning. There is a finite number of boards and the good ones go out early, particularly in December.

Surfboard rental in Varkala

Renting, in short.

How much is surfboard rental in Varkala?

At Kuma, ₹1,000 for two hours, ₹1,500 for a half day and ₹2,000 for a full day, leash included, whichever board you take.

Do you need a deposit or ID to rent a board?

A photo ID, which we look at and hand straight back. We don't retain documents and we don't hold a cash deposit. Boards are checked over with you at pickup so nobody argues about an old ding later.

What happens if I damage the board?

Bring it back and tell us. We repair boards on this beach anyway, and yours is unlikely to be the worst one we've seen this season. Anything chargeable gets quoted after we look at it, with the damage shown to you, never before.

Can I rent a board as a beginner?

You can, but a first-timer alone on a rented board mostly gets tired. One 90-minute lesson first will get you standing, and then the rental is genuinely fun rather than an endurance event.

Do you rent wetsuits?

Nobody surfs here in a wetsuit, the water is warm year-round. Rashguards come with lessons, and you'll want one for the sun rather than the cold.

Can I store my own board at Kuma?

Guests get board storage and an outdoor rinse as part of the house. If you're staying elsewhere in Varkala and stuck for somewhere to put a board, ask us anyway.

Anything not covered here, message us on WhatsApp at +91 99953 38248.

Not sure which fits?

Send your dates, headcount and surf level. We'll point you toward the right room, session or week.
