Terms & Conditions

What you're agreeing to when you book with us. Written to be read rather than skipped. It's shorter than you're expecting.

1. Who these terms are between

These terms are the agreement between you and Kuma Surf House ("Kuma", "we", "us") whenever you book a room, a dorm bed, a surf lesson, board hire or a surf camp. Whether you book on this website, over WhatsApp, by email, or in person at the house.

Booking anything means you've accepted them. If something here doesn't work for you, tell us before you pay rather than after.

2. Booking and payment

Rooms and surf sessions are paid in full at the time of booking. There is no deposit model and nothing is due at the property.

Surf camps work differently: a 50% deposit confirms your place and the balance is paid when you arrive. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll send you the GPay/UPI details.

A booking is confirmed when we say it is, by email or WhatsApp, not when the payment leaves your account. In the rare case that a payment succeeds but the room has already gone, we refund you in full, immediately.

All prices are in Indian Rupees. Prices shown on the site are what you pay; we don't add booking fees, service charges or resort fees at checkout.

3. Prices and taxes

We change our rates from time to time, particularly between seasons. The price you were shown when you booked is the price that applies to your booking, a later increase never applies retroactively.

Any rate on the site marked "indicative" is not yet confirmed and is shown for guidance only. We will quote you the real figure before you pay anything.

Government taxes that apply to your booking are charged as applicable and itemised on your receipt. If you need a tax invoice made out to a company, ask us before you pay rather than afterwards.

4. Photo ID at check-in

Every guest aged 18 or over must present a government photo ID at check-in, and we are required to record it. This applies to every property in Kerala and we cannot check anyone in without it.

Indian nationals: Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or voter ID. A PAN card alone is not accepted because it carries no address.

Foreign nationals: passport and a valid Indian visa. We are required to report your arrival to the Bureau of Immigration on Form C within 24 hours of check-in. We handle the filing; all we need from you is the passport, for about two minutes.

We record what we have to and hand the document straight back. We do not keep passports, and you should not let any property keep yours.

5. Check-in, check-out and the house

Check-in is from 1:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Late check-out or early check-in is usually fine if the room is free, just ask.

The house rules are short and posted on the stay page: we're pet-friendly but Pulli isn't allowed in guest rooms, parties and drinks are welcome at a reasonable volume, and a lost key or damage may be charged for.

No smoking indoors, anywhere in the house, including the rooms. That is Indian law rather than our preference. There is an outdoor spot and we'll point you at it.

Bring people up to the rooftop during the day by all means. Anyone staying the night has to be booked in, because how many people are sleeping in the house is something we are required to know.

Keep the volume sensible after 11pm. Somebody here is getting up at half six to go surfing, and on most nights it is several of them.

We may ask a guest to leave without a refund for behaviour that puts other guests or staff at risk. This has essentially never happened and we don't expect it to.

6. Surfing, and the risk that comes with it

Surfing is a physical activity in open water and carries real risk of injury. Our instructors are ISA Certified, sessions run in a maximum of chest-height water over a sand bottom, group sizes are capped at five students per instructor, and an instructor is in the water with you throughout.

You must tell us before a session about any medical condition, injury, pregnancy or medication that could affect you in the water. We are not trying to talk you out of surfing. We're trying to put the right instructor next to you.

You agree to follow your instructor's directions in and out of the water. An instructor may end a session, or refuse to run one, on safety grounds. When we make that call the session is refunded or rescheduled in full.

Children learn from around age eight, and a parent or guardian must be on the beach for the session and must consent to it for anyone under 18.

An instructor may decline to take someone out who has been drinking. That is not a judgement, it is the same call a lifeguard would make.

7. Boards and equipment

Boards go out on a photo ID, which we look at and hand straight back. We do not retain documents and we do not hold a cash deposit. Rates are per board.

Hired boards and equipment stay ours. Normal wear from normal surfing is expected and isn't charged for. Dings happen and most of them we fix for nothing.

Bring the board back within the period you paid for. If you are late because the waves were good, tell us and we charge the next tier up rather than a separate penalty.

Serious damage or a board that doesn't come back is charged at the cost of repair or replacement. We'll show you the quote rather than name a number.

8. Surf camps

Camps run for 5 days / 4 nights with a maximum of 14 people. A camp needs at least 5 sign-ups to run.

If a camp doesn't reach that minimum we'll tell you as early as we can and refund your deposit in full, or move you to another date if you'd prefer.

The published itinerary is what we plan to do, not a guarantee of each activity on each day. Surf conditions move sessions around and that is the nature of the thing, the number of sessions stays the same.

Refer a friend and you both get 10% off the regular price (not combinable with early bird).

9. Your own insurance

Travel insurance is not included in anything we sell, and we strongly recommend a policy that covers watersports, medical treatment and trip cancellation.

We are not responsible for your personal belongings. There is storage at the house for boards and valuables. Use it.

10. Photography

We take photos and video around the house and in the water, and we sometimes use them on this site and on Instagram. If you'd rather not appear, tell any of us at any point. Before, during or long after your stay, and we'll leave you out or take it down. No form required.

11. What we're responsible for

We're responsible for providing what you booked to a reasonable standard, and for the safety of the activities we run. Where we fall short of that, our liability is limited to what you paid us for the booking in question.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be excluded under Indian law.

We aren't liable for things genuinely outside our control. Flight delays, weather, strikes, power cuts, or a swell that refuses to arrive.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The version that applies to your booking is the one published on the day you booked, and the date at the top of this page tells you when it last changed.

13. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by Indian law, and the courts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala have jurisdiction over any dispute.

Before any of that: talk to us. Almost everything that has ever gone wrong here was sorted out on the rooftop in ten minutes.
