Late January at Edava
The month the surf numbers favour.
If you are choosing a camp on the sea alone, the numbers point here. Surf-Forecast's spot guide names January the best month for Varkala, and its long-term record shows why: clean surf 45% of the time, blown out 21%, and offshore wind 48%, the highest share of the year. There is more swell to work with than in December too, 66% of the time against 56%.
It is also one of the two driest months. The India Meteorological Department's long-term averages for Thiruvananthapuram give January about 20 mm of rain, highs around 32 to 33°C and nights at 22 or 23°C. Late-afternoon humidity is in the low 60s, the lowest of the year on those averages. The water averages 28.4°C, the lowest of the four months from November to February, which still means a rash vest and board shorts.
Republic Day falls on Tuesday 26 January 2027, which is Day 4: an ice bath at 11, the first video review at 3:30pm and yoga at 5pm. Day 3's paddling practice in the pool is on Monday the 25th.
The coast is still busy in January, easing after New Year, and the Cliff stays lively after dark through December and January.
If you stay on after the closing barbecue on Wednesday the 27th, a fifth night is added at the room rate for those dates.
Trains fill up in January. Book overnight services from Bangalore or Chennai as early as you can, and search for Varkala Sivagiri by its code, VAK.
Pack light clothes, strong sunscreen and a light layer for breezy evenings.

The week
Four mornings in the water.
The camp covers four nights. Plenty of people stay on after the closing barbecue: a fifth night can be added at the room rate for those dates.
Day 1
Arrival & welcome
Check in from 5:30pm, an opening circle to meet the group at 6:30, and the welcome dinner at 7:30.
Day 2
Introduction
Two-hour surf at 7am. Ice bath at 11am. Classroom theory at 3:30pm, then yoga at 5pm to stretch for the days ahead. Dinner together.
Day 3
Good habits
Surf at 7am. Ice bath at 11am. Paddling practice in the pool at 5pm (from November). Dinner.
Day 4
Consistency
Surf at 7am. Ice bath at 11am. Video analysis and one-to-one feedback at 3:30pm, then yoga at 5pm. Dinner.
Day 5
Last waves
A last surf at 7am. Video feedback at 3pm, a final yoga session at 5pm, and the closing barbecue.

Saturday start
A Republic Day surf camp in Varkala, Saturday to Wednesday.
Republic Day Camp runs from Saturday 23 January to Wednesday 27 January 2027. Of the six camp dates, it is the only one that begins on a Saturday.
26 January falls in the middle of the week, and dinner is at the house every night, so Republic Day gets a proper evening.
Every morning
Leash on, ride in, walk it back.
The first evening is for arriving. After that, every morning starts in the water at seven.
Surf transport to the beach is part of the camp, so getting there is not your problem. Being awake is.
What it costs
January, after the New Year crowd has gone
The Republic Day surf camp in Varkala is ₹20,000 for a dorm bed, ₹26,000 for a shared private room and ₹36,000 for the private room to yourself, per person for the five days.
That is a third less than the Christmas week for the same programme, on a coast that is quieter in late January than it is in December.
Bring someone and you each take 10% off, so a dorm bed is ₹18,000. A 50% deposit holds the place and the rest is paid on arrival.
