Late February at Edava

The last of the cooler, dry months.

February closes the pleasant stretch of the Kerala year. Kerala Tourism counts December to February as the cooler months, and the India Meteorological Department's long-term averages for Thiruvananthapuram put February level with January for rain, at about 20 mm, with highs around 32 to 33°C and nights at 22 or 23°C. Late-afternoon humidity is still in the low 60s. From March, the heat and the humidity build.

The sea is often settled. Surf-Forecast's long-term record has February clean 36% of the time, blown out 28% and too small 36%, with offshore wind (41%) still well ahead of onshore (29%). The water averages 28.7°C. A month later, onshore wind edges ahead for the first time since October, which makes this the last camp of the season with offshore wind more common than onshore.

None of the holidays that bring Varkala's biggest rushes lands in February: Diwali, Christmas to New Year, Republic Day and Holi all fall elsewhere. It is still peak season, though.

The pool is part of the week by now. Day 3's paddling practice falls on Sunday 21 February at 5pm, and the two video reviews come on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 February, the last two days.

Kerala Tourism suggests booking ahead, especially for weekends and holidays.

Pack breathable clothes, strong sunscreen, a hat and a light layer for breezy evenings. The rain jacket on the October and November lists can stay at home, though the current forecast on the India Meteorological Department's website is worth a look before you travel.

No occasion

A February surf camp in Varkala, named after the month.

The other five camps are named after something. This one is named after February. It runs from Friday 19 to Tuesday 23 February 2027, with the weekend in the middle.

A plain name does not mean a thinner week. You still get three ice baths, yoga, two video reviews, classroom theory, pool practice and the closing barbecue.

In the water

Beginners and improvers, not in one pile.

The camp takes complete beginners through improvers. Sessions are split by level, so nobody spends the morning waiting on the slowest or chasing the fastest.

Twice in the week, your session gets filmed for video analysis. Being told to bend your knees is one thing. Watching yourself not do it is another.

What it costs

February, and the only discount there is.

The February surf camp in Varkala is ₹20,000 for a dorm bed, ₹27,000 for a shared private room and ₹37,000 for the private room to yourself, per person for the five days.

A referral is the way down, and the only listed discount there is. Refer a friend and you each take 10% off, which puts a dorm bed at ₹18,000, a shared room at ₹24,300 and the private room at ₹33,300.

Half confirms the place, the balance is paid when you arrive, and the camp runs on five sign-ups.
