Late March at Edava

Hot afternoons, early mornings, fewer people.

By late March the peak crowds have gone and the days are getting properly hot. On the India Meteorological Department's long-term averages for Thiruvananthapuram, March highs sit around 33°C, nights stay at 24 or 25°C, and late-afternoon humidity is up from February's low 60s. Mornings are damper still: the same averages put the 8:30am reading at about 78 to 81% from December to May. Rain is still light, under 50 mm for the month.

The sea is usually still in good shape for learning, but the wind is turning. Surf-Forecast's long-term record has March clean 32% of the time and blown out 37%, and onshore wind (36%) edges past offshore (33%) for the first time since October. Kerala Tourism says early mornings are usually best, when the wind is lighter, which makes the 7am start on each surf day count.

The water is warmer than on any other camp, averaging 29.5°C, and the pool is part of the week: Day 3's paddling practice falls on Sunday 21 March at 5pm.

Holi is a busy long weekend for domestic travel. After these dates the surf season has one month left: Kerala Tourism puts its end at April.

Our advice for March is to surf early, rest through the afternoon heat and come back out for the sunset. Pack the lightest clothes you own, a hat, extra sunscreen and electrolytes, and drink more water than you think you need. The afternoon heat is serious.

A fifth night after the closing barbecue, on Tuesday 23 March, is added at the room rate, which holds steady at the house from January to the end of April.

Last of six

A Holi surf camp in Varkala, last on the list.

Holi Surf Camp runs from Friday 19 to Tuesday 23 March 2027. It is the latest of the six dates, so if the rest of the list has slipped past you, this is where it ends.

The name does not come with a festival programme. The week is the same as the other dates, surf every morning, three ice baths, yoga and a closing barbecue, and we would rather say so than promise you colour.

Every surf morning

Surf first, breakfast after.

On every surf morning the order holds: two hours in the water from 7am, then breakfast at the house.

Three late mornings bring an ice bath and three evenings bring yoga, so the week has a rhythm without feeling like a timetable.

Numbers

Holi needs five people to run.

Fourteen is the most a camp takes.

If the Holi surf camp in Varkala does not reach five, the week is cancelled and deposits go straight back.

It is ₹20,000 for a dorm bed, ₹25,000 for a shared private room and ₹35,000 for the private room to yourself, which makes March the joint cheapest camp of the season alongside October.
